About the Loss Lab
The Grief and Loss Research Lab (aka The Loss Lab) is a scholarly research hub dedicated to critical analyses of the myriad ways that loss affects people throughout the life span, with the ultimate goal of promoting death literacy and grief literacy. The Loss Lab is home to a variety of research projects under the direction of Dr. Carrie Traher, Chair who started the Loss Lab in 2019. Members of the research team include Dr. Lisa McLean, Research Associate, who joined in 2022, and Dr. Adrienne Sauder, Research Associate, who joined in 2023.
Within academia, Thanatology is a recent field of study and the need for well-grounded research and integration of theory and praxis is highly relevant. Skillful knowledge of death, dying, grief, and loss is applicable for those working in such professions as nursing, policing, first responders, educators, health and wellness professionals, policy development, and funeral care providers.
The Loss Lab, in association with the Department of Thanatology at King’s University College (an affiliate of Western University), is well positioned to make significant contributions to this area of inquiry given the range of courses offered, the breadth of thanatological scholarship, and the diverse student interests. The Loss Lab provides students with opportunities to develop qualitative research skills, critical thought, and the capacity to recognize the significance of essential Thanatological scholarship in advancing the understanding of death and non-death losses.
Aligning with the values of a liberal arts education as well as the mission of King’s University College, the Loss Lab encourages the pursuit of knowledge, ethical action, articulate and creative expression, and the ability to utilize knowledge to better one’s community.
